FAQs
What permits or zoning codes are required for me to put a shed on my property?

Check with your county or city government to receive the most up-to-date information in your area. Each jurisdiction has their own building codes and set backs that differ from each other.

How long do wood sheds last?

Old Hickory Sheds are made from quality materials and Mennonite craftsmanship that, if maintained, can give you 40+ years of use.

What type of foundation is recommended for my shed?

A gravel base 2 inches thick with ¾ inch to 1-inch size gravel is the ideal foundation.

Is it cheaper to build your own shed?

Building your own shed has a lower initial cost than buying a pre-built shed, although if you “pay yourself” for time spent on assembly, a pre-built shed will probably be less expensive.

What should I not put in my shed?

Sheds are not designed to store food, electronics, cardboard, musical instruments, or clothing. These items are subject to warping, heat damage, rotting, or pest infestation.

Can I have the inside finished with insulation, electrical, or other amenities?

We only complete the rough framing of the shed. You will need to work out anything else you want to have added.

What kind of clearance do I need?

The minimum clearance height of 13 feet is needed to safely move a building. To move through gates and openings the width clearance is a minimum of 5 inches more than the width of the building. For more information on this subject, please refer to our video on shed deliveries or call us directly to confirm and verify. (link to shed delivery video)

Do animal shelter sheds include a barn door?

Barn doors can be added as an upgrade.

How tall is the loft in the lofted barn shed?

The loft height can vary with the size of the lofted barn. The average loft height is about 3.5 feet.

Is ground work included with the delivery and setup?

Ground work is not included with the purchase or setup of the shed. If ground work is needed to level the ground or you want a gravel base or concrete pad, you will need to have that arranged and worked out before delivery. If you do not want to do any ground work, we will level the shed with wood blocks at no additional charge or cap cinder blocks (8” x 16” x 4”) at the cost of $3.50 per block.
